A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. 25 And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. 26 But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves.
As a husband to a teacher, I marvel at the patience of educators. They prepare their rooms long before the first day of school. They prepare their lessons long before the actual class starts. Then they get to school, get little cooperation, even less appreciation, and no respect from the kids. Yet they do it. I marvel at the patience of Jesus. He came to earth to die for us, he spent three years teaching the disciples about servant leadership. He modeled it by washing their feet and serving them. He served the Last Supper in preparation for the crucifixion and the institution of the new covenant in his broken body and shed blood. Then they did this.
We often forget all the preparation that goes into the blessing God has lavished on us. God loved us long before he created us. He prepared a way to bring us to himself by sending his Son to a cross. He prepared our hearts for receiving the Holy Spirit. Then we go and do whatever it is we will do today that shows we really don’t appreciate Jesus like we should. May we be mindful of that today.
Dear Lord, thank you for the preparation and sacrifice that went into our salvation. Prepare us today to worship you and to prepare a presentation of what you have done. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
