They say, “Come, let us wipe them out as a nation;
let the name of Israel be remembered no more!”
5 For they conspire with one accord;
against you they make a covenant—
6 the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites,
Moab and the Hagrites,
7 Gebal and Ammon and Amalek,
Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre;
8 Asshur also has joined them;
they are the strong arm of the children of Lot. Selah
Take a tip from one who has tried. That is what all these nations could have told Nazi Germany in the 1930’s when their anti-Semitic persecutions began. From Pharaoh to Hitler, Peter Kreeft says, the world has tried to rid themselves of this tiresome rag-tag nation but for some reason, they exist. We know why. God promised. Later, the psalmist relates Gideon’s victory over the Midianites after God whittled Gideon’s army down to 300 to show that it was his power, not theirs. Israel will be remembered forevermore because of God’s promise.
Now that Jesus has come and is building his church, there is a new promise for us as we prepare to suffer similar persecution as promised in Revelation. We can endure because of another promise found in Revelation.
Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done.
To those who would rid the world of this pesky Christian faith and destroy the church, we have one message that nations have ignored for millennia. It too has been tried, from Rome to Washington, yet the name of Christ is worshiped until he returns.
Dear Lord, thank you that the nations are powerless against your Sovereign will and promises. Help us to remember that promise when the time comes. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
