Two things I ask of you;

      deny them not to me before I die:

            8       Remove far from me falsehood and lying;

      give me neither poverty nor riches;

      feed me with the food that is needful for me,

            9       lest I be full and deny you

      and say, “Who is the LORD?”

                  or lest I be poor and steal

      and profane the name of my God.

Very rarely do we see such a desire as this one from Agur, the author of these proverbs. They do not get bridges named after them because they were not rich. They also do not get books or movies made about them like the poor in The Grapes of Wrath. They are just ordinary people who are content with the way their life is and have no ambition for any other life. What wisdom! He even sees the pitfalls awaiting the rich and the poor man. Above all, he wants this, not for his own creature comfort, but to glorify the name of God.

How refreshing it would be if this land were filled with such people that want only for God to be glorified. They would not steal, whether rich or poor, but they would love their neighbor as they love themselves. They would not seek to make themselves rich but to make others disciples. They would seek the glory, not of themselves, but their Creator and Savior. They would love Jesus Christ, who was rich and became poor, because he wanted to save us and make us heirs of his glorious riches. This is no lie!

Dear Lord, thank you for this glorious truth. Help us to set our eyes on the treasures of heaven instead of the rusty, moth-eaten ones on earth. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
