I will bless the LORD at all times;

      his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

            2       My soul makes its boast in the LORD;

      let the humble hear and be glad.

            3       Oh, magnify the LORD with me,

      and let us exalt his name together!

We can blame the 70’s for many things; like disco. Another thing the “Me Decade” brought us was a rise in individualism instead of the community that had been a trademark of American society to that point. As we see in this psalm, keeping an eye on ourselves can be good. Notice the three words, I, me, and my as he praises the Lord, boasting in him instead of his own individual greatness. That is what differentiates the psalmist from the self-centeredness of this present age. The other thing is that, immediately after this concentration on self come the exhortation to praise the Lord together. It is a call for gathering in community that would benefit from a repeat performance.

Ever since Covid-19, the edifying act of gathering together in church on the Lord’s Day has never returned to 2019 numbers. Instead, an increasing number of individuals have decided to go it alone, being fed through online sermons by celebrity pastors or the occasional podcast. Technology has benefits and this is one of them but community has always had the benefit of caring for each other and learning from each other together. Come to Cape Community Church tomorrow and enjoy the fellowship of gathering together to exalt his name together.

Dear Lord, thank you for the church and the call to gather together. May we be spurred to exalt his name together and magnify the Lord. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
