40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).
What does your name mean? The meaning of our name can give us significance. Or not. My name, Brad, means broad meadow. Twice in two verses, John gave the meaning of the names of Jesus and Peter. Their names meant something. Jesus is the Anointed One who saved the world. Peter was the rock, the first spokesman for the new Christian church.
You may not feel significant in your walk with the Lord but here is a name whose meaning is not given; Andrew. It means strong but even if it did not, what Andrew did here was of immense significance. He heard the word of the Lord about Jesus and followed Jesus himself! What’s more, he went and told someone about it. This someone was his brother, Cephas (which means Peter). What a difference that made!
If you are walking aimlessly on this earth, not knowing what you are really supposed to be doing, I can confess to being there for years. Keep going. Do not give up. The time is coming when the Lord will put a person in your path and you will be able to say, “We have found the Messiah.” That person may in turn tell their family and friends and a revival may come in one family because of your seeming insignificant life. What does your name mean?…
You shall be called a child of God.
