8 The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people. 9 But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless.

If you want to see things that are unprofitable and worthless, go to a yard sale or flea market and look at some of the prices on what would appear to be junk. Apparently some people place importance on different things. Paul places importance on good works, not as a means of salvation but as a fruit of salvation. They are excellent and who does not love things that are excellent? They are profitable, not financially, but spiritually and in how they send a profitable message about the gospel, that it is true and bears fruit in our daily lives.

At our flea markets, on the third Saturday of each month, many vendors pull into our church parking lot to set up tables of goods that, to some, look like junk. Not all of this is unprofitable however. Each table has a stack of invitations to Cape Community Church and each invitation has the gospel message in it. These are free but they are excellent and profitable. What’s more, we have a team of Prayer Walkers interacting with vendors and those who walk onto our property. They are presented with an offer so profitable that it would be wise to sell all you have to buy this pearl. Leave your cash in your pocket and taste of the free gift of Jesus Christ. Come and see. You will be…
