And now, behold, the cry of the people of Israel has come to me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them. 10 Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.”

So many people silently cry out something similar to “My God! My God! Why have you forsaken me!” Except these days, they leave out God and simply cry out to…nobody. It is heartbreaking to think that people are so alone that they have no one from whom to seek comfort. The rise in suicides bear this out, unfortunately. How comforting these words to the Hebrew slaves were! They had been slaves for 400 years and could not have been blamed for thinking it would never end. But God had a plan to deliver them because he was always there.

A common objection to belief in a loving God is the question, “Where was God when that terrible thing happened?” The answer is he was there. How comforting these words are to his chosen people, his church! We know we are never alone. When we are in trials, we know we are not alone. When we face death itself, we are at a peace that many people find strange. They ask us, “How are you doing this?” We can rightly say that we are not doing it. Look at the Bible. Every time a miracle occurred, it was obvious that the man, Moses, Joshua, or Elijah, was not capable of this. Your cry will go up to him.

Dear Lord, thank you for your presence in the lives of your people and that you hear our cry. Help us to cry out more. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
