My heart overflows with a pleasing theme;
I address my verses to the king;
my tongue is like the pen of a ready scribe.
2 You are the most handsome of the sons of men;
grace is poured upon your lips;
therefore God has blessed you forever.
It seems strange to see a love song in the Bible, besides the obvious one of Song of Songs, but Psalm 45 is designated as a love song. Verse 1 is the poet giving a short introduction. Verse 2 is the bride speaking to the groom in the most loving way. Many early scholars think this may be Solomon and a princess bride but there is no way of really knowing. It evokes the memory of reading about Isaac and Rebecca, Jacob and Rachel, and even Joseph and Mary in the New Testament who, though they were not yet married were, as betrothed people, allowed to call themselves husband and wife. The love of a man and a woman is a pleasing theme indeed!
Which brings us to marriage and love today. The boundaries have been moved to include same sex marriage, cohabitation, and easy divorce. Wedding vows do not have the punch that they once did because they can be broken the instant one of the parties wants to. The covenant of marriage has become little more than an extended fling. We need to return to the days of the love song so we can get a glimpse of the covenant with God and man symbolized by the Bridegroom, Jesus Christ, and his bride, the Church. He will never be unfaithful, no matter how adulterous we can be. When we see our Bridegroom…
Our hearts will overflow with joy!
