Now concerning the matters about which you wrote: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” 2 But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. 3 The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband.
Not knowing something can be maddening sometimes. For instance, there is a letter from Paul to the Laodiceans that we know nothing about. There are possibly two letters Paul wrote to the Corinthians that we know little about. Obviously, they are not inspired Scripture. And, there is a letter from the Corinthians to Paul that we know something about but not much. What we know is in verse 1 above. The Corinthians asked Paul whether they should get married or not because they are Christians. It is a strange question because the Bible is clear that marriage was created by God for man to be fruitful and multiply. Their thinking may have been like the Cathars in the Middle Ages who abstained from all things creaturely, including food. The results were dire and unnecessary.
Come to Cape Community Church as we tackle the complex issues of human sexuality that are getting thornier every day in our culture. We will see what happens when we get it right and when we get it wrong. Above all, we will see God’s hand in marriage and in the world as he instills order in the family, the church, and the world.
Dear Lord, thank you that you have given us these glorious gifts to enjoy and honor you with. Help us to glorify you with them and not misuse them. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
