But I will come to you soon, if the Lord wills, and I will find out not the talk of these arrogant people but their power. 20 For the kingdom of God does not consist in talk but in power. 21 What do you wish? Shall I come to you with a rod, or with love in a spirit of gentleness?
“See you soon!” These words can be seen as an encouragement that two loved ones will be reunited. But it can also be meant sarcastically as a warning that indeed, you will be seen soon and watch out when that day comes! Paul’s use of sarcasm in this chapter is striking for its rarity in Scripture. Here, Paul speaks of the arrogant people who seem to be speaking disparagingly of Paul. Paul’s promise is that everyone will soon see what these people are made of, not just in their talk, but their actions. It would be fun to be able to see what happened!
Actions speak louder than words. Jesus commended the son who spoke like he would not obey and yet obeyed. We recite wedding vows but later, we will see who meant what they said or who just moved their lips and did whatever they wanted. Words have consequences but actions have results. May we be found to be faithful to our promises to each other and to the Lord. May we be seen in our actions, rather than merely heard. Remember Jesus promised us, as Paul promised the Corinthians, “But I will come to you soon.” May we be ready.
Dear Lord, thank you for the word and the words of comfort found in the gospel. Thank you especially for the actions on the cross. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
