This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. 2 Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.

Watching a narcissist try to act humble can be comical. The more they talk, the better the chances they will play their hand, that they are their favorite person. When Paul wrote this to the Corinthians, he meant it. The Greek word for servants here denotes a servant with authority, like a court official. Stewards, likewise, means a manager of some sort. He asserted his authority but kept his role and that of Apollos, as servants. And to confirm Paul’s humility, he would open many of his letters as a doulos, the Greek word for slave, the lowest a person could be but he was a servant of and steward for Jesus Christ. His message for the Corinthians was the same as earlier in the letter. We are servants. Paul plants, Apollos waters, but God gives the growth.

Come to Cape Community Church tomorrow and find out what our role is in our church as we seek to be servants and stewards of what God gave to us. He blessed us with this church and called us to manage it for him. May we be found faithful and obedient to our Master as he builds his church in Cape May and in the world.

Dear Lord, thank you for the cross and the church. Help us to be officials, managers, and slaves of Christ, the head of the church. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
