Be still, and know that I am God.

      I will be exalted among the nations,

      I will be exalted in the earth!”

            11       The LORD of hosts is with us;

      the God of Jacob is our fortress

To this day, not just as a kid, I look out the window in expectation when we are expecting company. It is like I do not believe the ETA they texted me 20 minutes before and have to see it for myself. Psalm 46 is a psalm of praise for God’s presence in hard times, his power, and his provision. Yet, in these last two verses, God knows that we are not as secure in his promises as we should be. We find ourselves looking up, wondering where God is and when he will get there to help us. God’s words are a kind rebuke that says, “Don’t worry. I am here.”

If we know that he is God with all the attributes he possesses, and we know his promises to bring all people to their knees, and that he is with us, why do we look longingly for his presence in our lives? Verse 1 tells us he is a very present help in trouble, yet we live our lives at times like it is all up to us. This is not a problem of knowing God, but trusting God. When we trust God, we will be still, not fidgety. We will be expectant, but not nervously looking up and wondering. To be still is to be secure in the knowledge of the love of God.

Dear Lord, thank you that we have nothing to fear or worry about because you are there. Help us to be still and know you are God. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
