6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. 8 He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. 9 For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building.

A watched pot never boils. Of course, it does eventually but watching it, wondering and worrying, makes it feel like it never will happen. Paul planted about 20 churches so he had no time to obsess over each one, worrying about its survival. Corinth required more care and pruning than any other in his care but Paul wrote here that this too is nothing to worry about. Paul planted. No big thing. Apollos watered. No big thing. God gives the growth! Now, neither Paul nor Apollos deserve worship nor should they worry. Worry is the enemy of faith.

We have spent the last 8 years in the work of planting this church. Many people watered it in that time. I remember worrying, watching the pot and wondering why it would not boil. Then God made it grow and my previous lack of faith was apparent. None of us should have worried or been worshiped. The church is God’s field and God’s building. We are servants in God’s field, working with our fellow servants and worshiping in God’s building. Let us praise him today for the growth in us and in his church.

Dear Lord, thank you that you build your church and that we are fellow workers. Help us to worship the one that makes it grow and no one else. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
