And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.
“Did our hearts not burn within us?” Sometimes great moments are not immediately recognized at the time. Many mundane events in my life turned out to be instrumental in bringing Vicki and me to Cape May. The two disciples who encountered “a visitor to Jerusalem” as they called him, failed to realize who he was until he opened their eyes. As soon as the recognition hit, he was gone from their sight, but the burning remained. Their understanding deepened their faith and their faith deepened their understanding. They could now confidently go to the disciples and there proclaim,
“The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!”
Today, on this day after Easter, let us imagine how the lives of the two disciples changed and were different on that Monday. On this Monday, may we have that same change. May our hearts burn within us constantly as the Holy Spirit opens the Scriptures for us, convicting us of sin and showing us who God is and how we are saved by the blood of the Lamb. May we now have the ability to open the Bible to any book and see Jesus where we did not see him before because our eyes were closed to the possibility. Imagine the possibility today.
Dear Lord, thank you that you are still risen and on your throne. Help us to see with open eyes that you are always here. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
