This will be your opportunity to bear witness. 14 Settle it therefore in your minds not to meditate beforehand how to answer, 15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict.

Come in. We’re Open. Store owners put this sign on the door so you feel comfortable walking in. Jesus spoke to his disciples about a different matter. He had just described great tribulation on the earth. Wars, earthquakes, persecution, prison, even death, could await those who come through the open doors of God’s grace. These temporary sufferings are far outweighed by the eternal blessings that also await the believer in Jesus Christ, eternal life in his kingdom. This is why Jesus could make the strange statement about trouble in the world and for Christians. This will be your opportunity to witness. It is exactly what it sounds like. In darkness, the light shines brighter. Not only that, the words of life come to us in times of trouble.

You may not think of your situation right now as an opportunity to witness. But no matter the trial, we can bear witness to the mercy of God to doctors and nurses, lawyers, bill collectors, even enemies. We are commanded not to worry about the future. I will be the first to admit I do anyway. Let us pray together that we will see each problem as an opportunity and proclaim the name of Jesus Christ to someone today.

Dear Lord, thank you for the Holy Spirit who helps us cope with trials. Help us to see these events not as obstacles but opportunities for us to witness your saving power. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
