22 But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
23 Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed.
Most metaphors and analogies help us understand complex issues and
C. S. Lewis was a master at it. Paul was also a master of metaphor and hyperbole, wishing the circumcision group would emasculate themselves! This metaphor has proven to be especially confusing. The same man that correctly proclaimed all Scripture breathed out by God, here called it a jailer. It was simply Paul’s way of differentiating the covenants. The law perfectly reveals God’s character, but it is unapproachable because of our sinful nature. It is not Scripture that held the people captive, but the old covenant based on the law. They needed justification, redemption, and adoption. The next verses tell of Jesus Christ who did all of it with a new covenant.
The metaphors Paul used are especially good for us. We were dead on our sins but made alive in Christ. Now we know that we are no longer prisoners to the sin that binds us under the law. We are now under grace and forgiven of sins in Christ. What a joy to know that Paul used language we can understand, even if it at first seems confusing, to give us the Good News of Jesus Christ! We are no longer prisoners or slaves, but are children of God because of the gospel. Scripture is true and the truth will set you free!
Dear Lord, thank you that the Bible is true and we are set free by the suffering of Christ. Help us to love you more. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
