When Joshua dismissed the people, the people of Israel went each to his inheritance to take possession of the land. 7 And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work that the LORD had done for Israel. 8 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of 110 years.

I mentioned in my sermon last Sunday that 11 presidents have served in  my lifetime. Most of them are fading from memory. As I write this Jimmy Carter is in hospice at 98. He too will sadly be eventually forgotten by most. Here Yeshua, Joshua’s death is described at 110. The previous verses tell a story that will never be forgotten because God included it in his word here in Judges. He had a job to do. He brought the people into the promised land as their inheritance, and he led them to serve the LORD all Joshua’s days. It was finished. His faith and obedience were never forgotten.

There is another man named Yeshua, Jesus, meaning the Lord saves. His faith and obedience led to a cross where he sealed the inheritance for all who believe in him and entrance into the promised kingdom. He died around age 33. His act of mercy and love will never be forgotten because he reigns. He said on the cross that it was finished but our hope would begin when he rose again. May we serve the Lord all the days of our lives.

Dear Lord, thank you for the cross and for sending Jesus to be the Lamb of God and the King of kings. Help us to live for him today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
