The LORD has sworn
and will not change his mind,
“You are a priest forever
after the order of Melchizedek.”
It has been said that it is a woman’s prerogative to change her mind but don’t sell men short. All of mankind is fickle and their passions are fleeting. Let’s not forget children either. I wanted to be a baseball player, architect, astronomer, and race car driver, among other things, in my short childhood. Praise the Lord that he has made up his mind and he will not change his mind. That comes in handy when he makes a promise, like the one to David regarding Melchizedek, a seeming obscure king and priest in Genesis 14 that Abraham pays tribute too. He makes an appearance in this psalm and in Hebrews as a type of Christ. That means that he points forward to him as the only other priest and king. God promised through David a King and a Priest for Israel, a Messiah. Then he kept his promise when Jesus was born in a manger.
Now he has kept his promise to us by sending him as a sacrifice, the Lamb of God, so we could have death pass us over when the judgment comes. Jesus is a Priest and king forever. That means that he represents us to God forever, laying our sins at the foot of the cross. He is our King forever. This means that when he returns, every knee shall bow and tongue confess that he is Lord. The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind.
Dear Lord, thank you for your steadfastness and your promises and that you are not fickle like we are. Help us to be as true to your word as you are. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
