1 The LORD says to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand,
until I make your enemies your footstool.”
“To be or not to be.” Most people know that this quote is from Shakespeare’s Hamlet. They also might know it is the most quoted line in all of Shakespeare. Ask the man on the street what it means, however, and you will not be encouraged by the answers. Hamlet is wondering whether existence is worth it and whether suicide is a viable option. He may be the first existentialist, one who knows life has no meaning so make something up to get by until you die. Or end it. How glorious to have this psalm! Psalm 110 is the most quoted psalm in the New Testament. Verse 1 alone is cited in 20 different verses. It is more important to know what this means than Hamlet. This means there is a reason to live. There is a Messiah, a priest to intervene for his people, and a King to usher in a great kingdom, exercising judgment on his enemies.
Come to Cape Community Church tomorrow and find out what this entire psalm means. We have a Savior who forgives sin, a priest who represents us to the Father, and a King who will rule in righteousness. This King will not be defeated by his enemies. In fact, these enemies will bow and declare that Jesus Christ is Lord.
Dear Lord, thank you for the manger, the cross, and the throne. It means you are sympathetic to our plight and able to save us and rule us in love. Help us to submit to you and serve you all our days. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
