Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and with a loud voice he called to all the birds that fly directly overhead, “Come, gather for the great supper of God, 18 to eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all men, both free and slave, both small and great.”

The early church was as misunderstood as it is today. The Romans spread a rumor that Christians were cannibals because they ate the Lord’s Supper, eating his flesh and drinking his blood. If we did not read these verses closely, we would see more evidence. The marriage supper of the Lamb had taken place in verse 9 but this was the great supper of God for the flesh eating birds to eat. God’s judgment on these people is egalitarian. Kings and slaves are equal in their guilt and their punishment. It was not pretty.

Steve Martin said that comedy is not pretty. Neither is judgment. All of history culminates with the return of the King of kings, Jesus Christ. The Lamb of God that took away the sins of the world is coming back to take away the enemies of God who thought they ran the world. It will not be a glorious day. But for us, who are chosen by God, we have no fear of our Savior. It is urgent that we warn our loved ones of the supper to come.

Dear Lord, thank you for the righteous judgment that you will bring to the world. Thank you for being our advocate. Help us to warn the world of the calamity to come for those who are not in you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
