And David said, “Is there still anyone left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”

If I were a member of the house of Saul, I would be wary of David “showing me kindness”. It could mean my death was quick because Saul had pursued David for years and revenge was a natural reaction. This was not just David in a good mood. It was David keeping a promise to Saul to preserve Saul’s offspring. It was even more than that. It was David being faithful to a covenant he made with Saul’s son, Jonathan, the father of Mephibosheth. When David found out Jonathan had a son, the covenant kicked in. When they cut that covenant, all that were “in them”, their offspring, were also in the covenant. That meant David was not just showing kindness to Jonathan’s son. He was honoring a solemn vow to him. Mephibosheth would be saved by something done for him years before.

Come to Cape Community Church tomorrow to see the enormous benefit we enjoy by being “in Christ”. Find out how we are in covenant with God the father because of something done for us millennia ago. We will learn how God is not merely kind to us but much more than that, he honors the promise that all who are in his Son are saved. Praise the Lord!

Dear Lord, thank you for the promise of the Son, the offspring who saved us by shedding blood before we were born. May we be grateful as we eat at the King’s table. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
