They built for Pharaoh store cities, Pithom and Raamses. 12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And the Egyptians were in dread of the people of Israel.

Many movies and TV are about the triumph of the human spirit over adversity. The human spirit is no match for the Holy Spirit, whose ability to preserve us and help us persevere is a triumph far more heartwarming and real. The Hebrews had just been reduced to slavery by the Egyptians who feared them because they were being blessed by God. They thought that this would keep them quiet and in their place. But this is just the beginning of the book called Exodus. Their exit from this oppression came, not because of who they were, but because of whose they were. God promised them a land for their offspring and no superpower would stop it.

God promises us a kingdom and no superpower will stop this either. No matter how much you are oppressed by financial woes, employment issues, and relationship troubles, all because of your faith, you are his and no one can separate you from the love that is yours in Chtrist Jesus. You may feel like you have moved enough bricks to build Pithom and Raamses. Because you belong to the one true God who will build his church and his kingdom, you can rest in his everlasting arms, knowing he will never abandon you.

Dear Lord, thank you that you are our God and we are your people. Help us to trust in your promises today as oppressions come our way. Bless us all the more. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
