The war horse is a false hope for salvation,
and by its great might it cannot rescue.
18 Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear him,
on those who hope in his steadfast love,
19 that he may deliver their soul from death
and keep them alive in famine.
Astonishingly, our American currency still says “In God We Trust”. In actuality, for many people in this land, it is the money itself that they place their hope. It is their god, along with the possessions, prestige, and power they buy with it. The psalmist David saw this 3,000 years ago. In Psalm 20, he noted the trust in chariots and horses and its inevitable failure as he repeated it here. That is like me placing my hope in my 2006 car with 216,000 miles. It will eventually become rusted junk.
There are many false hopes for salvation making the rounds in our world today and people are just beginning to see the futility of hoping in this life and in this world. CEO’s have no hope in their corporations as they fall like dominoes in market corrections and mismanagement. Armies cannot hope in their power as their weapons age and rust. People cannot hope in relationships because they are also fleeting. There is only one hope for this world and it is the steadfast love of the Lord. He already showed it in his mercy to us in not destroying us for our sin. He showed it even more astonishingly by sending his Son to a cross to deliver our souls from death. He is the true hope.
Dear Lord, thank you that you are the Light of the world and its only hope. Help us to seek you today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
