And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. 2 And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them.
Standing Room Only. In 2008, I paid $43 for just such a ticket at Fenway Park for a Red Sox game. They lost. This scenario in Mark was far different and a ticket was far more valuable. The good news was that a ticket was not required. Jesus was at the home of Peter most probably. It was somewhat early in his ministry but great crowds were already following him. So crowded did it get that no one could get through the door. However, if someone wants to see Jesus, nothing can stop them. Later in the chapter, we read of the paralytic being lowered through a hole in the roof and being healed. Only the Pharisees would see that as a loss. It was a true win for Jesus and those who were there witnessed it.
What a joy it must be to hear from Jesus. You can. The Bible is the spoken word of God and it is best heard preached to them as it was in the house. May we hear the word of the Lord as a body of believers.
Dear Lord, thank you for the word that is preached. Thank you that Jesus modeled it, lived it, and died for us so we could believe it and live. Thank you for healing us and teaching us. Help us to appreciate the privilege we have and that our churches would be standing room only as you build new ones. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
