So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, 18 so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.
Part of the challenge of pursuing the love of a girl is convincing her of the soundness of our character and the authenticity of our declarations of love. As young men, we were apt to say anything, even “I love you.”, to achieve her affections. Empty promises are the farthest thing from the character of God. His nature is unchangeable. He makes promises that are guaranteed. He convincingly shows who he is with his steadfast love for us. His greatest demonstration that these are not mere words was his sacrifice of his Son on the cross. At the sight of such suffering, the audience of the letter to the Hebrews could be in no doubt of his authenticity. This would be important as these Christians began to suffer horrific persecution.
We may tend to doubt the authenticity of God in our less faithful moments. In these moments, we can doubt his word or that the Bible even is his word. We can doubt if his promises can be believed, even in the face of his oath keeping throughout the history of the Jews and the church. We have no reason to doubt God or to walk away from him.
