3 But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and though I multiply my signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, 4 Pharaoh will not listen to you. Then I will lay my hand on Egypt and bring my hosts, my people the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great acts of judgment. 5 The Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring out the people of Israel from among them.
Evangelizing can feel like building a sand castle washed away by the tide. People are blessed that you prayed and receptive of the gospel but walk away and the tide of life washes over them again. We can wonder why we do it? Moses could have asked a similar question after this encounter with God. Moses had just been given the potentially suicidal task of demanding of Pharaoh the release of the Hebrew slaves. Then God told Moses this. It won’t work. What’s more, God would make it so it would not work. Do it anyway, God could have said. Then came the good part that God would do everything else.
Many in our congregation are tired today as last night we started our Warming Center ministry. We could ask why we do this in such a broken world with so little prospect of success. We need to study this Scripture. In it we find that our faithfulness and obedience gives us the opportunity to watch God do the rest, changing lives and building his church. Remain faithful. The people of your community…
Shall know that Jesus is Lord.
