Blessed are you, O LORD;

      teach me your statutes!

            13       With my lips I declare

      all the rules of your mouth.

            14       In the way of your testimonies I delight

      as much as in all riches.

            15       I will meditate on your precepts

      and fix my eyes on your ways.

            16       I will delight in your statutes;

      I will not forget your word.

When learning to drive a truck in the 80’s, my boss gave me this advice. Use reverse as little as possible. This is because visibility and control are decreased and accidents are more likely when we are backing up. I never forgot it and I still declare it because I think it is still valuable. The psalmist feels the same way about the Scriptures. They are important words of advice from God. Look at the verbs he uses surrounding God’s word. He declares their value to God and to anyone who will listen. He delights in the word, even the parts that convict him of sin. He meditates on the word, not plowing through it just to say he read the whole thing. He delights in it so much that he remembers it.

This Thanksgiving, we have much to be thankful for and all of it is contained in Scripture. The message of the Bible is that God created the world and promised to undo the damage we did by sending his Son to the cross to die for our sins. Today, meditate on it, delight in it, and declare it. Do not forget what it says as you celebrate with family so you can declare it to them in love. Give thanks for the Bible, love the Bible and its authority but most of all…

Love its author. Happy Thanksgiving.
