“For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.

Safe deposit boxes are not as widely used as they once were. Perhaps you have one. What treasure is in it? Or for those who do not have one, what treasure would you put in it? Childhood memories? Stock options? We do not have to ask God, as Douglas Kelly says, because we know that in God’s safe deposit box would be his treasure, which is his people. This verse in Deuteronomy shows that the Jews are God’s peculiar treasure and he has a plan for that treasure. But what does that mean to us now that Jesus has come as the Jewish Messiah?

It means that now there is a New Covenant. Peter, a Jewish fisherman, told his audience in 1 Peter 2:9 that they are “a people for his own possession”. Now all who believe in Jesus Christ are a treasure for God in his safety deposit box, which is his kingdom. If you are a follower of Jesus Christ, rest in the glory of God because he has chosen you as a royal priesthood of believers. He chose you out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. Are you as amazed as I am at that glorious truth? I certainly did nothing to deserve that. Because of the cross and Jesus taking our sins on himself, we are holy to the Lord our God. You are his treasure and…

You are in safe keeping.
