Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, 2 and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, 3 and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their means.
“No man is an island.” That is from a poem from John Donne, written around the time of William Shakespeare. His premise was that we are all connected in some way to each other. He meant it in a Christian sense which is the tone of this passage in the gospel according to Luke. If anyone could go it alone, it was Jesus, who had the power to heal and do miracles. He could have built the kingdom then and there. He did something extraordinary instead. He allowed sinful people to participate in the plan. He used men and women, rich and poor, to proclaim the good news of his salvation.
After his ascension, he used this model to build his church and it continues today. At Cape Community Church, we have elders ready to be put in place. We have a robust Women’s Ministry. The Lord has provided the finances necessary for us to not only pay our bills but to help the poor, the very thing Jesus commanded of us. The church is people who have been healed, forgiven, and called. No one is disqualified from serving the Lord in some capacity. He will build his church and he will use those he chose to bring it about. You are not on an island but in…
The Family of God.
