I waited patiently for the LORD;

      he inclined to me and heard my cry.

            2       He drew me up from the pit of destruction,

      out of the miry bog,

                  and set my feet upon a rock,

      making my steps secure.

            3       He put a new song in my mouth,

      a song of praise to our God.

                  Many will see and fear,

      and put their trust in the LORD.

As a child, we all remember the view we had of adults standing next to us, usually of their hips. Remember then when an adult would bend down so you could see their smiling face. They are actually paying attention to you! It was a special feeling. That is the emotion behind this praise that David lavished on the LORD. David knew about patience, waiting about 17 years after he was anointed to finally take the throne from Saul. All the while, he had this view of God, who bent over to him so David could feel his gracious presence.

Think also to a time as a child when you struggled to get into a stool until a grown up picked you up and placed you safely in the seat. Again, David knew of this special treatment as he enquired of the LORD. He knew that, during any struggle the LORD gave him, God would pick him up and make him secure. He promised to do so.

We should be able to feel this presence of God in our lives, particularly in our struggles with the trials of life. He will bend down and pick you up so you can sing a new song of what God did for us in sending his Son to bend down for us and be lifted up…

On a cross.
