In my distress I called upon the LORD;

      to my God I cried for help.

                  From his temple he heard my voice,

      and my cry to him reached his ears.

            7       Then the earth reeled and rocked;

      the foundations also of the mountains trembled

      and quaked, because he was angry.

            8       Smoke went up from his nostrils,

      and devouring fire from his mouth;

      glowing coals flamed forth from him.

            9       He bowed the heavens and came down;

      thick darkness was under his feet.

People think Ouija boards are harmless fun but it is a harsh truth that if you call on evil spirits, they will come. There is nothing harmless about that. How much more then, can we rejoice that, in our distress, we can call on the Lord and cry for help. Remember the comfort when you cried out for Mom or Dad and there they were. Francis Schaeffer wrote a book called The God who is There. What a comforting title that could have come from any one of these psalms, this being no exception. When the evil spirits come, they do tricks. When the God of the universe arrives, mountains do not seem as stable as they once did.

He is still the God who is there. We can cry out in our distress and he will come. He is not a harmless God. When he comes, bow down in worship, praise him, and do what he says. Then, praise him again for what he has done, namely, sending Jesus to the cross. The other things we call on are there too but they are powerless before the throne of God above. Today, in good times and bad, rejoice that our God is…

The God who is there.
