Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory,
for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!
2 Why should the nations say,
“Where is their God?”
3 Our God is in the heavens;
he does all that he pleases.
Pinky swear. How binding is that really? Many Christian ministry leaders would have no problem saying these words that begin Psalm 115 but how many of them would be saying it through gritted teeth, knowing they are being a bit disingenuous? Are we really saying pinky swear? Do we not want just a little glory for ourselves and then the rest can go to the Lord after we skim a bit off the top? This psalm says otherwise. And then he gives the reasons. God is steadfast in his love. We can never overuse this phrase for God because it is so comforting. Nothing we do, good or bad, has the slightest effect on the love God has for us. Nothing we do to violate the covenant he made with his people has the slightest effect on his faithfulness to that same covenant. His presence is evident to those who are his. The rest are wandering this earth alone. He is in heaven as a Sovereign God and verse three makes that clear.
Many people have no intention of keeping promises, vowing in marriage to love as long as they live and then proving their love is considerably less than steadfast and faithful. For them, it is to themselves that they give glory and they are encouraged in this selfishness from the cradle to the grave. Today, give glory to the name of Jesus Christ and his steadfast love that did not waver like a pinky swear.
He did as the Father pleased.
