let Israel now say—
2 “Greatly have they afflicted me from my youth,
yet they have not prevailed against me.
3 The plowers plowed upon my back;
they made long their furrows.”
4 The LORD is righteous;
he has cut the cords of the wicked.
5 May all who hate Zion
be put to shame and turned backward!
6 Let them be like the grass on the housetops,
which withers before it grows up,
7 with which the reaper does not fill his hand
nor the binder of sheaves his arms,
8 nor do those who pass by say,
“The blessing of the LORD be upon you!
We bless you in the name of the LORD!”
“Must be a day ending in ‘Y’.” I confess those words have escaped my lips on numerous occasions. These are moments when it seems like every time I turn my head, something is there to fall on it. It is also in these moments that I am the furthest from God and his provision for me. I forget that no matter what happens, God is for me.
The psalmist proclaimed that Israel had been through rough times. As you may have guessed, this psalm was probably written after the calamities of Assyrian and Babylonian captivity. Even in these tough times, God’s protection was evident to the psalmist which means they should be all the more obvious to us now that Jesus has come and forgiven our sins. Now, no matter which way we turn our head, we see, not calamity, but the Lord in his mercy and love. Now, instead of my words of despair, we can cling to his word of the Lord that proclaims if he is for us…
Who can be against us?
