Nineveh is like a pool
whose waters run away.
“Halt! Halt!” they cry,
but none turns back.
9 Plunder the silver,
plunder the gold!
There is no end of the treasure
or of the wealth of all precious things.
10 Desolate! Desolation and ruin!
Hearts melt and knees tremble;
anguish is in all loins;
all faces grow pale!
You are having a great time on a hot summer afternoon when the lifeguard blows the whistle and says, “Everybody out of the pool!” This ruins the fun but it also means something bad is coming. In our case, it is usually a thunderstorm. Well, picture the prophet Nahum as the lifeguard of Nineveh. They had repented at the preaching of Jonah a century before and were enjoying the precious things of life when they forgot about God. Therefore, in later verses, God said, “I am against you”. Those are not the words you wanted to hear in Nineveh.
They are not the words you want to hear in America either but for us, it is different. God has sent Jesus and now, he is for us. Romans says that if he is for us, who can be against us. The world can but Jesus has overcome the world.
We enjoy vast riches just by virtue of being American. It puts us among the richest people in the world. It is here that people especially are prone to forget God and enjoy their precious things. They neglect to thank the author and provider of these blessings. Therefore, when Jesus returns, there will be those who hear the words, “I am against you. Depart from me you evildoer.” May we be like the Ninevites of old, repenting of our sin and enjoying the cool refreshment of…
The Water of Life.
