Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” 19 (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.”
Behold! Look! Listen up! These phrases are designed to get the attention of an audience so they behold, look, and listen up to what comes next. When Jesus said, “Truly, truly…”, what he said next was going to be of supreme importance. A good example is this prophecy to Peter about what will be coming. The parentheses tell us that this was to tell Peter how he would die. Peter lived close to thirty years wondering when this would happen! That does not sound comforting. But it is. This told Peter, the early church, and us that Jesus knows the end from the beginning and that his promises are true, even if we suffer martyrdom for it as Peter ultimately will.
Come to Cape Community Church to witness the climax of the life of Peter as he was restored and reconciled to Jesus and commissioned to lead in his church. We will see the importance of this public proclamation of a public redemption of a man who committed a very public sin. We will learn to apply these promises to ourselves so we know that, no matter what, Jesus knows and loves us. This should make it easy to…
Follow him.
