Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him

I recently saw an article in which a businessman said that chasing your dreams is a terrible plan that leads to disillusionment and resentment. At first it seemed like a slap in the face. Our fairy tales end in “happily ever after” when everything falls into place. Our feel-good movies end with a miraculous dream-come-true ending. Oh, and the bad guy loses. The article’s point was that this does not always happen and a dose of reality will serve you well in life. Paul’s verse here to the Corinthians is a case in point to an extent. Wherever you are, God put you there. Whatever your task on earth is, God called you to it. This is a call to stay where God has you, whether it is married or single, circumcised or uncircumcised,  slave or free. This sounds strange as we study Galatians and see the dream of release from slavery.

There was a lot of envy in Corinth. There is a lot of envy in our churches today. There are those in Corinth who told people they needed to do this in order to be spiritual. The same happens today. There were those in Corinth who were discontented with their lot in life and would change their circumstances if given the chance. I lived that way for some years, wondering why I was doing the job I had. Little did I realize that I was called to it for a purpose and now I am called to this one for his purpose. God has called you to this life, whether it is your dream or not. Let your life be your answer…

To his call.
