Romans 10:12-13

12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

If there is a thesis statement to Romans, this may be it. Paul’s anguish for his fellow Jews was clear in the previous chapter. Read chapter 10 and you will really see his concern that God’s covenant people are chosen for this new covenant. He wanted them to know that they are not saved by being Jews or keeping the law but by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. But what does it mean to “call on the Lord”?

As a child, I would hear my dad call on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ constantly but it was usually during Eagles games. You may think you are saved because your grandmother took you to Sunday School and you have your baptism and confirmation certificates. Not so. Paperwork won’t save you, only bloodwork. Call on the name and the blood of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins and you will be saved. It won’t be invisible. There will be forensic evidence. There will be traces of the blood in your life. Paul says, quoting Isaiah, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” There will be testimonial evidence. In other words, if you are calling on the name of the Lord for your salvation, someone should be able to hear it. If you have called on the name of the Lord, give someone a call. If not, you need some bloodwork. Call now to make an appointment.
