Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.

Nicodemus. If you read the gospel of John, when you see this name you will ask yourself, “Where have I heard that name before?” You will then remember chapter 3, when Nicodemus snuck out under cover of darkness to find out more about this Jesus of whom people spoke. What he heard was earth shattering.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

At this point in the narrative, Nicodemus has certainly become a follower, risking his safety to participate in his burial. What thoughts are going through his mind? “How is that promise going to be kept now?” that could be one of his questions. Stay tuned Nicodemus! The story is not over!

Come to Cape Community Church tomorrow to celebrate why we are a church in the first place. All of human history turns on what we will see tomorrow in chapter 20. Mary Magdalene’s confusion will dwarf that of Nicodemus. We will want to shout to Mary like an Eagles fan yelling at the TV, “He’s right behind you!” We will find out how different our lives are because he lives. We can face tomorrow. We know that, whatever happens, everything will be okay because…

He is right beside you!
