The servant girl at the door said to Peter, “You also are not one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.” 18 Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.

Big Brother is Watching. This line from the George Orwell novel, 1984, became a slogan of anti-authoritarianism in the 1960’s. The important thing for us to remember is that, more importantly, everyone is watching. Peter was being watched by the servant girl and all those warming themselves by the fire. Everyone was talking about the arrested man inside and all eyes were on Peter and his audience waited to hear what this man would say about Jesus of Nazareth. Was he the Christ, the Son of God? His reply? Peter denied knowing him and that he was a follower of Jesus. Just think that the golden chance to proclaim the Messiah had ended in the people possibly thinking Jesus was a fraud.

That is a sobering thought for us. As we go out today, we are being watched, not just by the government, but by those who would want to know who Jesus is. May we be found to be unashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ. May we be found in the marketplace, proclaiming Christ as Peter would after the Resurrection. What will people think of Jesus Christ after spending time with you? Will they be convinced that he never existed or that he is the King of kings, the Risen Lord? When they wonder if you are a follower of the Great I Am, may  your actions never say…

I am not
