The man declares, I am weary, O God;
I am weary, O God, and worn out.
2 Surely I am too stupid to be a man.
I have not the understanding of a man.
3 I have not learned wisdom,
nor have I knowledge of the Holy One.
This is another one of those rare occurrences of the word “stupid” in the Bible. It was never a nice word in our household and it is not used positively here. It portrays man in his true light as a finite human being who is trying to understand the infinite eternal God of the universe. With that fact in mind, the author must confess to stupidity and a lack of understanding, wisdom, and knowledge. It is not a case of self-deprecation on display here. It is a cry of surrender from a man who has tried to go it alone and found that he is lost without a map. His only recourse is to move over and let God take the wheel.
There is an old saying in response to an older bumper sticker, “God is my Co-pilot.” It goes like this, “If God is your co-pilot, move over! That is good advice from this passage in Proverbs. If you are trying to navigate your way through life, flying blind and using only the instrument panel, move over and let God take control because, hint, he IS in control! It is not the small man who admits he is stupid and lacks wisdom in knowledge in the face of Almighty God. The fool says there is no God. The fool also says there is one and he does not need him. If that is you, get out of the driver’s seat and take your place, following the Lord Jesus Christ…
Wise up.
