Luke 19: 37-38
37 As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, 38 saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
Jesus was riding into Jerusalem on that Palm Sunday in fulfillment of Zechariah 9, humble and mounted on a donkey, and the disciples proclaimed his name. Peter, who had called him the Christ, was most likely among them. What a difference a few days will make! The people will cry out, “Crucify him!”, and Peter will claim, “I don’t know the man.” This is nothing new to God. the Israelites, just before the 10 commandments were written, claimed in Exodus 19:8, “All that the Lord has spoken, we will do. 1,200 years later, Jesus rode into town and knew better. That’s why he went to the cross. To keep the promise that they broke.
This is Holy Week but this is a trying time for us all. The Surgeon General has said this week will be the worst week of most American’s lives. There will be uncertainty, fear, death, and sorrow. Many will vow to God complete obedience if they just get through this week. Unfortunately, history tells us they will not obey the Lord. But thank God this is Holy Week! We have hope.
