In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 And all went to be registered, each to his own town. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.
In courtroom dramas, people give evidence and we believe witnesses more when they have conviction and when they give lots of detail. Exhibit A for the miraculous birth of the Savior is Luke 2:1-5. There can be no doubt that Luke researched carefully the facts surrounding the coming of the Messiah. This is why we can believe in the virgin birth. So many Christians have a hard time with this aspect of the Bible but I cannot fathom why.
Seeing is believing, many would say. If that is the criteria, there is no historical event that can be believed to have happened. We must rely on documented accounts for historical events. That is just what we have here with Luke and the other gospel writers. Eyewitness accounts and compiled evidence are all that is needed to convict a criminal in a court of law. This is evidence for the veracity of Scripture, the Messiahship of Jesus of Nazareth, and the way to be saved. Our sin is the smoking gun that convicts us before the Great Judge. There is more than enough evidence to prove that we need a Savior and he was born in a manger. Weigh the evidence…
