For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.

If you ever wondered why the Bible is divided into the Old Testament and New Testament, verse 17 from John is a good place to find the answer. In these few words, John refers to the covenant God made with the Hebrews through Moses and the law which was the contract of that covenant. The rest of the verse infers that the people were unable and unwilling to honor their end of the bargain so God intervened. That is what we are celebrating at Christmas. The people were in darkness and suddenly there was a great light. Jesus entered into the world, God made flesh, born in a manger to bring grace and truth to the world. He was made known so we could know the way to be saved.

John’s theme of Jesus as the Light of the world is more stark today as the world gets darker and darker. Out of the darkness came a great light. There is a reason our eyes hurt when the light comes in pitch blackness. Our eyes become accustomed to the dark. This Christmas, may we keep our eyes on the Light of Christ so our eyes do not become used to seeing the bleak and black night we are living in. Let us not lose sight of what he has saved us from; our inability to be in the presence of God. Praise God that he became present with us instead. That is why we say Merry Christmas. The Light of the world has ushered in…

Joy to the World!
