For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. 27 He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself.
Before cable, my dad watched the Flyers for years and never saw the puck. That was because, no matter how much he worked on that antenna on the roof, he could not get the signal. Then we would change the channel and start the whole process over. Well, think of Jesus as cable. Now streaming I suppose. The priests in the Old Testament were in the old covenant and had to constantly offer sacrifices for the sins of the people because they would sin daily. The process would start all over again. The author of Hebrews gave some good news to the Jewish Christians that thought about going back to that system to be safe. Jesus said, “It is finished.” and it was. When Jesus presented himself on that cross and shed the blood offering to the Lord, we could then stop daily shedding blood because the spotless Lamb of God had truly taken our sins away.
This is a comfort for us today. Read Hebrews 7 and see that trying to be good and go to heaven is the equivalent of going back to the old covenant. You had better be good at it. There are 613 statutes in that law. It is better to see it as an unattainable goal which could only be reached by Jesus Christ. You no longer need to struggle with the sins in your life…
He fixed it once and for all.
