Do not spurn us, for your name’s sake;

      do not dishonor your glorious throne;

      remember and do not break your covenant with us.

            22       Are there any among the false gods of the nations that can bring rain?

      Or can the heavens give showers?

                  Are you not he, O LORD our God?

      We set our hope on you,

      for you do all these things.

It is ironic when we get away with violating a rule for so long and then suddenly feel ill used when a law is enforced. We should have received a warning, we reason. Congratulations! You are now exactly like Israel. For centuries, God warned them of the curses that awaited them if they did not obey his terms of the covenant. He kept his word the entire time, leading his people into the promised land and defeating the enemy armies that stood in their way. They continuously violated the covenant laws and…were shocked that God was bringing judgment on them! Their plea to him for mercy smacks of the mock contrition we exhibited as children to avoid an old school punishment.

Now that we are in a new covenant with God, we know that he will not spurn us or break his promise to us because it was sealed with the blood of his Son Jesus Christ. Let us take heed of that and strive to return the favor. Let us not spurn our Lord in favor of some sin we enjoy committing. Let us not dishonor his glorious throne by sitting on it ourselves. Let us not violate the covenant by worshiping our false gods of money and power. May we set our hope on him…

For he does all things.
