Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. 3 At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison— 4 that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak.

My hermeneutical and homiletic didactic expositions exhort you to sanctification. That is a really unclear way of saying the preacher should say what the Bible says and means so people can grow in the Lord. Most of us like the second way of saying it. So did Paul. It may be that false teachers were coming into the church in Colossae and making believers’ heads swim with the first type. We might be tempted into thinking that these guys are so smart; I don’t understand a word they said but I will follow them. Paul instructed the church to pray and to be watchful. There were pitfalls and snares in the church and Paul and his companions needed to be ready to explain the mystery of Christ in a clear way.

Come to Cape Community Church tomorrow and, if I am doing it right, you will hear a clear message of who Jesus is and how we can know him truly, if not completely. Pray also this morning for our Prayer Walk Teams in Rio Grande NJ today. Pray that the Lord would open doors for the word and that we would be clear about what we must do to be saved. Help us to proclaim Christ…

Which is how we ought to speak.
