Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.
“To thine own self be true.” These words of advice from Polonius to Laertes in Hamlet are the rallying cry of the human race today. What’s in it for me? How does this make me feel? I pledge myself in marriage for as long as you meet my needs. These words from Paul to the church in Colossae must sound like anathema to most people today. It gets worse. Wives and slaves don’t fare too well seemingly. Husbands and masters win this time. That is, until we look at these verses and we get to the nub of the matter. No matter who you are and what you do, the Lord is our real Master.
Come to Cape Community Church tomorrow to see how the world can become more free if everyone became a slave to the Lord and Master, Jesus Christ. The question you may ask yourself as we unpack this passage is “Why should I?” The Colossians may have asked it as well. We will find the answer in looking at how Jesus lived his life on earth. Tomorrow, Jesus will teach us to submit, honor, and obey, not ourselves, but the word of the Lord. The Bible will teach us to surrender our will to the Lord in a counterintuitive bid for freedom. Become a slave…
Receive a son’s inheritance.
