Your hands have made and fashioned me;

      give me understanding that I may learn your commandments.

            74       Those who fear you shall see me and rejoice,

      because I have hoped in your word.

“If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you…”, you may be a Christian in 2021. The words of Rudyard Kipling’s poem have relevance today as the world is coming undone. Even the Secretary General of the United Nations decried the state of the world. Most Americans hold a bleak view of the future now. How odd the person with hope, peace, joy, and love must look in such a situation! The psalmist is just such a person. Because he had hoped in the Lord, those around him could look at him and have their fears alleviated because they see a Creator with a plan. In hard times, it is good to see that someone is keeping their head. Praise be to the Lord that created our heads!

The above mentioned bleak outlook on the world is a serious blow to secular humanism, the view that the irreligious can bring hope and joy to the world. It is also a blow to fans of the song “Imagine”, by John Lennon. “…And no religion too.” The Psalms, along with the rest of Scripture, assure us that the heart is deceitful above all things and there is no hope apart from Jesus Christ. He is the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but by him. No one can fix the world. He can, he did on the cross, and he will when he returns to restore us to right relationship and reign forever. May people look on us and rejoice. We have…

Hope in the word.
