Great are the works of the LORD,
studied by all who delight in them.
3 Full of splendor and majesty is his work,
and his righteousness endures forever.
4 He has caused his wondrous works to be remembered;
the LORD is gracious and merciful.
“I want to find out how God created this world.” Those are not the words of a theologian or a minister, but of the greatest scientific mind of the 20th century, Albert Einstein. Of course, most scientist see this as a metaphor but the psalmist is probably closer to the truth when he said that those who delight in the earth study it. This word for study is used only here in Scripture. God has revealed his creation to us so we can know its inner workings and remember the laws of physics he invented when he designed it. There is much more to this earth than atoms and gas. There is God’s righteousness, grace, and mercy. He could destroy us all with an asteroid today and he would still be just.
The mistake many people make is by studying the design of the earth and the universe, operating under an innate assumption of right and wrong, and still denying the existence of a Creator who has a personal relationship with us. It is like observing a gothic cathedral with its vaults and flying buttresses, and not ascribing it to a designer. That is as absurd as seeing the complexity of the universe and its planets, especially the life bearing earth, and assuming it just happened. When we see the blueprint, we want to meet the architect. Christians have met him and have been saved by the righteousness, grace, and mercy of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Great are the works of the Lord!
