And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?”
Wednesday night in our Bible Study, Carl pointed out how all of the Old Testament from Genesis to Malachi points to Jesus. In Ruth, we saw the kinsman redeemer, Boaz, pointing to the Redeemer Jesus. Here in Luke, we see Jesus himself making the claim that he fulfills all of Scripture by quoting Isaiah 61:1-2. It appears Jesus read the Scripture while standing and sat down to preach about it. The summary of his message is in verse 21. “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” The people were transfixed.
Today, this Scripture has truly been fulfilled in our hearing. Just as Boaz redeemed Naomi and Ruth, so their offspring, Jesus, redeemed all of mankind through his death on the cross. The prophets promised Israel that a Redeemer would come and when he did come, they rejected him and killed him. Today, that same Redeemer lives but so many have rejected him. For those who reject him this time, there is more Scripture to be fulfilled by Jesus. He has promised to return to earth, this time as Judge. On that day, he will restore the world and set up his kingdom. The people will be transfixed then too. They will not ask if he is Joseph’s son. They will know…
He is the Son of God.
